Dusty Butt

Location

Based in Fairlie in the South Island High Country, with overnight stops in Alexandra on 16 and 17 February, returning to Fairlie on 18 February.

Registration, dinner and compulsory briefing are on Monday 15 February at the Gladstone Grand Hotel in Fairlie. Briefing starts at 20:00. Riders need accommodation in Fairlie for Monday 15 February and Thursday 18 February, and in Alexandra for Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 February.

The ride

Three-day adventure ride covering about 1400 km through scenic and remote lower South Island high country, on and off road. The route includes access over stations and trails ridden only during this event period due to special land permissions.

Suitable for both big and small bikes that are well maintained, fully serviced, and road registered. All riders must navigate by GPS. Groups are advised to have at least two riders competent with GPS navigation.

Terrain may include steep, slippery, rough, rutted, and challenging sections, plus stream and river crossings. Optional challenge sections are available for more competent off-road riders. Riders should be fit and prepared for 10-15 hours of riding per day.

Requirements

• Strongly recommended to ride with a buddy or group.
• No official recovery service is provided.
• Bike should cover about 300 km on one tank, or carry extra fuel in a compliant container.
• At least one rider in each group should carry a comprehensive toolkit and be able to perform basic repairs.
• Spare tubes are recommended.
• Riders must be prepared for severe high-altitude weather conditions and carry warm, waterproof spare clothing.

Conditions

Remote high-country environment, much of it sub-alpine to alpine, up to about 1700 m. Even in summer, riders may encounter rain, wind, cold temperatures, and snow.

Notes

The event is run on midweek days for safety and quieter shared trails.
