Long Way Around

Location

Based in Taupo, with the overnight stay at a private lodge in National Park. The route goes the long way around Lake Taupo and beyond, including private farmland and forestry roads and tracks.

The ride

GPS navigated adventure ride of approximately 700 km over 2 days.

Main route includes winding back country roads, gravel roads, and reasonably well formed off-road tracks through farms and forestry.

Optional challenge sections are available for competent off-road riders on enduro style bikes.

Suitable for road registered dual purpose motorcycles, from 250s to 1200s.

Terrain and conditions

Depending on the weather, riders may encounter short steeper inclines and declines, rutted areas, slippery or muddy terrain, and stream crossings.

Challenge sections may be more difficult if wet. Adventure tyres are recommended.

Navigation and support

Riders must navigate using GPS; roll charts are no longer used.

Groups riding together are advised to have at least two riders with GPS. At least one rider in each group should be competent using GPS navigation.

Moto Mapped staff riders will be on route to guide and assist where needed.

Guides, sweep crew, support vehicle, GPS coordinates, and land access fees are included. The Moto Mapped van will be available to carry bags not wanted on the bike.

Registration and schedule

Friday 6 November: registration from 18:00 onwards, with briefing at 20:00 at The Fox and Hounds in Taupo. Riders must sign on and collect ride packs, stickers, and event tees. Riders need to organise their own Taupo accommodation for Friday night.

Saturday: ride day 1, then overnight at a private lodge in National Park.

Sunday: ride day 2, returning to Taupo in the afternoon.

Facilities

Fuel stops and cafes along the route have been alerted and will be stocked with food and coffee.
